Video games being sold in New York must have clearly labeled ratings of violent content on all of their packaging due to a new law that passed Tuesday.

The New York Civil Liberties Union said that it planned to mount a legal challenge to the law, as it raised free speech concerns.

Similar laws in states like California, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota and Washington have all been thrown out and ruled unconstitutional.

Traditionally, the video gaming industry submits to rating on a voluntary basis and the system is similar to movie ratings.

The new law says it is compulsory that all video games that are already rated be labeled as well as new video game consoles be installed with parent control lockout features by 2010.

Bill sponsor Sen. Andrew Lanza, said, "This legislation will provide information and educate consumers to help them make better choices for their children."
